DALLAS, Dec 14, 2009 / FW/ — In Ireland, the right of every women to propose on 29th February each leap year, goes back since the 5th century, when the leap year day had no recognition in English law (the day was ‘lept over’ and ignored, hence the term ‘leap year’).
But, there is a catch. She only has 24 hours to pop the question to their boyfriends who’ve been dragging their feet. Such was the situation Anna Brady (played by Amy Adams) was in. She is dating the perfect guy, up-and-coming surgeon Jeremy (played by Adam Scott) for four years now, but their anniversary passes without a marriage proposal.
Investing in the ancient Irish leap year tradition, Anna decides to follower her cardiologist boyfriend Jeremy from Boston to Dublin and get down on one knee herself. It’s just what her wayward-but-well-intentioned father, Jack (played by John Lithgow), would want her to do. Simple…easy… right? Well… not really.
But when unreliable airplanes, inclement weather and bad luck leave the controlling Anna stranded on the other side of Ireland, she must enlist the help of the carefree-but-surly chef Declan (played by Matthew Goode) to get her across the country.
And as Anna and Declan bicker across the Emerald Isle, they discover something they should have known all along: the road to love can take you to very unexpected places.
